Borderlands 4 Reveals Pearls Are Coming Back In Jam-Packed Roadmap

Gearbox’s loot shooter is promising a big expansion in 2026

Get ready, Vault Hunters! The excitement is palpable as Borderlands 4 is just around the corner, set to launch in mere weeks. But wait—there’s more! The developers have just unveiled an expansive post-launch roadmap that promises a treasure trove of content over the next six months. And guess what? One of the biggest surprises is the return of Pearlescent weapons and shields from Borderlands 2! Yes, you heard that right!

During a lively developer panel at PAX West 2025, fans got an insider’s look at the game’s end-game features and how the XP-based loot grind will work this time around. This immersive experience is set to redefine what we know about looting in the Borderlands universe.

Mark your calendars because the first paid bounty pack is hitting the game this fall! Expect new missions, an exhilarating boss fight, and of course, a fresh batch of Legendary gear and cosmetics. Players can also look forward to Vault Cards, which are designed to enhance the grinding experience, allowing you to unlock additional rewards, including gear that can be re-rolled until you find the perfect fit for your build.

But the real showstopper? The first paid Story Pack is slated for release in early 2026. This will introduce a brand new Vault Hunter, a mini-story campaign, and a new area to explore—basically everything you need to fuel your loot-lust! This cosmic-horror-themed expansion centers on Mad Ellie, a Pandoran mechanic and the daughter of the beloved Moxxi. And yes, some familiar faces will also be making a return, with a second Story Pack lined up for later in the year.

In between these exciting DLCs, there are plenty of free updates, but the most significant will arrive with Bounty Pack 2 in early 2026. This update will reintroduce the highly sought-after Pearlescent rarity, which fans have been clamoring to see return since its absence in Borderlands 3. These exclusive drops are akin to ultra-rare items adorned with unique gimmicks. In Borderlands 2, they were more like coveted trophies rather than essential gear that determined your build. However, Gearbox has hinted that this time around, things might be different.

“Pearlescent gear drops will be incredibly difficult to find, but their power level will match their coveted rarity,” Gearbox stated.

Now, let’s not forget about the thrilling endgame features like Takedowns, which were all the rage in Borderlands 3. Though Gearbox hasn’t officially mentioned Takedowns yet, they have teased Invincible Bosses on the horizon. These formidable foes are designed to push teams of players to their limits, with massive health pools and deadly attack damage. It’s like facing off against bosses on steroids—are you ready for the challenge?

The first of these Invincible Bosses is set to drop before the end of 2025, so prepare your strategies! And if that’s not enough to whet your appetite, there will also be weekly encore boss fights, wildcard missions, and Maurice’s Black Market Machine arriving shortly after launch.

If the base campaign of Borderlands 4 can deliver a more engaging story than its predecessor, while also honoring the promised variety and build-crafting depth of the new Vault Hunters, then the post-launch roadmap appears to be overflowing with content for the endgame. But of course, these are two big ‘ifs.’ With Destiny 2 currently in a spiral and Diablo 4 poised for its next big expansion, the stage is set for some serious loot-chasing action.

So buckle up, Vault Hunters! The journey ahead is looking bright, and with so much content on the horizon, 2025 is shaping up to be an epic year for Borderlands fans. Don’t forget to sign up for our free newsletter to keep up with the latest reviews, news, and tips!
