Final Fantasy 14 Is Running Out Of Room On PS4

A special carve-out for the MMORPG is reaching its limits on the last-gen console

Is Final Fantasy 14 on the Brink of Moving On from PS4?

Ah, Final Fantasy 14—an MMORPG that has captured the hearts of millions since its launch over a decade ago. If you’ve been riding the waves of Eorzea on your trusty PlayStation 4, you might want to sit down for this news. In 2025, it seems that the beloved game is approaching a critical crossroads, and director Naoki “Yoshi-P” Yoshida has some insights to share that could shake things up for console players.

Yoshida, in a recent interview with Feed4Gamers, discussed the limitations of the PS4’s hardware and operating system. It’s no secret that the PS4 has been around since 2013, and while it has served players well, technology waits for no one. Yoshida acknowledged: “My basic stance is that I do want to continue supporting hardware which has grown old. But I do have one concern, and that’s regarding the OS of the PlayStation 4.”

He elaborated on the “data limits” imposed by Sony, which are beginning to hinder the game’s ability to incorporate new updates. “We are continually incorporating updates for Final Fantasy 14 and we are now approaching that limit,” he explained. This isn’t just a minor hiccup; it’s a significant concern that could affect the future of the game on this console.

What’s more, Yoshida revealed that while Sony has been accommodating by making exceptions to their standard regulations to support new content, they too are nearing their limits. “I will repeat myself: I do want to provide support for platforms as long as possible. However, there will eventually come a time when the hardware is at its limits in terms of its technology,” he warned.

So, what does this mean for dedicated PS4 players? While Yoshida reassured fans that he would communicate clearly about any decisions regarding the service, the writing seems to be on the wall. Major updates are rolling out, including the latest patch 7.3, titled The Promise of Tomorrow. However, the question lingers: how much longer can we expect new content to flow smoothly?

As we look to the future, it’s still a bit murky. Some players are speculating that the next expansion could land as late as spring 2027, but Yoshida hinted that we might get some clarity during the FF14 Fan Fest 2026, which coincides with the 10-year anniversary of A Realm Reborn.

It’s worth noting that Final Fantasy 14 isn’t alone in this struggle. Other multiplayer giants, like PUBG and Genshin Impact, are already making the leap away from last-gen consoles. Even popular annual franchises like MLB: The Show and Madden NFL have chosen to move on, leaving the aging hardware behind.

Considering it’s been nearly five years since the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S launched, it’s almost surprising that these transitions haven’t happened sooner. For reference, Final Fantasy 14 originally graced the PS3 in 2013 but bid farewell to that platform during the Stormblood expansion in 2017, a move that was announced eight months in advance. It’s entirely possible that the upcoming update 8.0 could similarly spell the end of FF14 on PS4, especially with the PS6 lurking just around the corner.

As we brace ourselves for what lies ahead, one thing is clear: the gaming landscape is changing, and players will need to adapt. Whether you’re a die-hard PS4 fan or considering an upgrade, the evolution of Final Fantasy 14 is sure to be a hot topic in the gaming community.

So, what do you think? Are you ready to embrace the next chapter of Eorzea, or are you hoping against hope that the PS4 will continue to support this beloved title for just a bit longer? One thing is certain: the journey is far from over, and we can’t wait to see what Square Enix has in store!
